About
A scientific approach to a technical problem.
Maatium was founded to bring the standards of experimental science to the practice of applied AI. That starts with the person leading every engagement.
The consultant
Credentials
- PhD, Bioengineering — University of Pennsylvania
- Independent consultant, AI strategy & implementation
- Based in the United States, working with clients nationwide
Maatium is led by its founder and sole consultant, who holds a PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. That training centered on building and evaluating complex, high-stakes systems — where an untested assumption isn't a minor bug, it's a failed experiment.
That same standard now applies to AI engagements: before a system is trusted with a real decision, its behavior should be understood, its failure modes should be mapped, and its claims should be checked against evidence.
Maatium works directly with founders, operators, and technical leaders — never through a layer of account managers — because the value of the work is in the specificity of the judgment behind it.
Operating principles
01
Diagnose before prescribing
Every engagement opens with an honest assessment of what's actually happening — technically and organizationally — before any recommendation is made.
02
Write it down
Findings, assumptions, and decisions are documented as they're made, so the reasoning behind a system can be audited later — by anyone.
03
Say no when the evidence says no
Not every problem needs an AI system. Part of the job is telling a client when it doesn't.
On the name
Maat is the ancient Egyptian principle of order, balance, and truth — the state that has to hold for any complex system, biological or computational, to function. The firm's name is a reminder that the goal is never AI for its own sake, but a system that behaves the way it's claimed to.
